55 candidates to battle it out in Jorhat

JORHAT, Feb 2 � After scrutiny, poll officials today finalised the names of 55 candidates for contesting the Jorhat Municipal Board election scheduled to be held here on February 9.

Though a total of 57 candidates filed their nominations for the civic body�s poll, AGP candidate Bapukan Das of the Royal Road locality here and independent candidate Jinu Ahmed of Puja Dubi Road in the city withdrew their nomination papers today, which were submitted for ward No.2 and ward No.3 of the municipal area respectively.

According to poll officials, the names of Aruna Dutta (BJP), Prasanta Barpujari (CPM) and Ramesh Dutta (INC) have been finalised as the candidates for the election to ward No.1, while Arifa Zaman (INC) and Pranjit Kumar Das (BJP) are placed in the final list of candidates for contesting the poll for ward No.2.

Poll officials said the candidatures of Lili Bora (INC), Monika Gogoi Das (AGP) and Junu Bora (BJP) have been finalised for the ward No.3, and the names of Tumpa Mandal (BJP) and Sandhya Rani Das Thakur (INC) have been finalised for the ward No.4.

The names of Aloy Ghosh (BJP), Fatema Begum (INC) and Ranu Begum (AGP) have been finalised for ward No.5, and Ashok Kumar Malpani (INC) and Ankur Gupta (BJP) are the candidates contesting for ward No.6.

For ward No.7, the names of Kamala Kundu (BJP), Jayita Mazumdar (AGP), Sima Chakrabarty (INC) and Minakshi Ghai (independent) have been announced as candidates, while the candidatures of Alak Mukherjee (independent), Mohammad Toufik (independent), Prabir Saikia (BJP) and Prasanta Kumar Bora (INC) have been finalised for contesting the poll in ward No.8.

Two candidates, Jaba Das (BJP) and Jitendra Nath Bora (INC), have been finalised for the election to ward No.9 while Kabita Khaund (independent), Jayanta Barua (INC) and Bidyut Kumar Phukan (BJP) are in the final list for ward No.10 of the municipal area.

Jayanta Borkakati (BJP), Debajit Kumar Bordoloi (INC), Archana Sarma (independent) and Pradyut Kumar Borkotoki (AGP) will contest the election for ward No.11.

For election to the ward No.12, only two candidates, Anju Srutikar (INC) and Mrinalini Barua (BJP), have been finalised by the officials.

Anjana Goswami (INC) and Pratibha Saikia (BJP) are placed in the final list for the poll of ward No.13, while four candidates � Abha Sarma (INC), Ritamoni Kalita (BJP), Lili Dutta (AGP) and Abanti Muktiyar Das (independent) � have been finalised for contesting the poll of ward No.14.

The finalised candidates for ward No.15 are Jayanta Madhab Sarma (AGP), Paban Bordoloi (BJP) and Pabitra Bordoloi (INC), while four candidates � Abani Saikia (BJP), Diganta Dutta (INC), Dwipen Hazarika (AGP) and Ranjan Bora (independent) will be locked in the poll battle for ward No.16.

Anup Ghosh Dastidar of BJP and Gitanjan Ganguly of INC are listed for the poll of ward No.17.

The candidatures of Babli Dhar (BJP) and Sila Roy (INC) have been finalised by the poll officials for ward No.18, while Rituparna Kharghoria Das (INC), Purabi Das (AGP), Surobhi Das (BJP) and Santi Devi Maheswari (independent) will contest the election for ward No.19.

�Besides publishing the final list of contesting candidates today, we have started a training programme for the polling officials in the district library premises. About 400 polling officials are undergoing training for the civic body election in Jorhat municipal area. Every political party has been issued handbooks for adhering to the Model Code of Conduct. Voters have been requested to cast their votes for the civic poll on February 9,� said ADC (officer in-charge for the poll) Bubul Lekharu.
