535 submit papers for Tripura rural polls

AGARTALA, July 4 - Altogether 535 candidates belonging to different political parties have submitted their nomination papers for the three-tier panchayat elections in Tripura, scheduled for July 27.

Out of these candidates, as many as 482 submitted their nomination papers for gram panchayat seats. As many as 367 candidates are from the ruling BJP and 41 are from the CPI(M), according to the latest report of the State Election Commission.

On Wednesday, 36 candidates submitted their papers for the panchayat samiti elections, out of whom 21 are from the BJP, six from the CPI(M) and four from the Congress.

In the Zilla Parishad elections, 17 nomination papers were submitted on Wednesday. As many as 16 of these nominations were from CPI (M) candidates.

Meanwhile, CPI(M) State secretary Gautam Das today alleged that his party candidates are not being allowed to submit nomination papers.

The last date for submission of nomination papers is July 8, while the elections will take place on July 27. The winners of the rural polls will assume office by the first week of August.
