5 railway staff awarded for alertness during duty

GUWAHATI, May 1 - Five railway staff were today awarded by Northeast Frontier Railway General Manager Sanjive Roy for showing exceptional devotion towards duty.

The five awardees are Surendra Kumar, Gateman, Suman Bhowmik, Guard (Mail), PK Sarkar, Loco Pilot (Mail), Abhijit Dhar, Senior Assistant Loco Pilot, and Jayanta Barman, Track Maintainer.

On March 30, Sarkar and Dhar, while working on Train No.12502 New Jalpaiguri to Guwahati felt jerking at a bridge between Ghoksadanga-Sajerpar stations. They immediately slowed down of the train and stopped it at Sajerpar and served memo to the Station Master of Ghoksadanga regarding the jerking.

Following this, the Section Permanent Way Engineer attended the site and imposed speed restrictions. Possible mishaps were averted due to their alertness.

On March 24, Barman was working on the track when he detected a rail fracture at a spot between Nalbari and Ghograpar stations and immediately managed to control UP NLP Salt goods train, thus averting a probable mishap.

Similarly, on March 22, Kumar, while performing duty at a level-crossing in Katihar, noticed smoke coming out from under the gear of a locomotive. He immediately indicated to the Loco Pilot to stop the train.

The train was controlled in mid-section and the Loco Pilot checked the engine and extinguished the fire, preventing an accident.

On March 21, Bhowmik prevented a probable mishap by informing the authorities after feeling a jerk at a point on the railway track between Falakata and Gumanihat stations.

In recognition of their roles in preventing mishaps and accidents, all of them were awarded with a cash award of Rs 2,500 each, along with a certificate, by Roy.
