5 killed in Brahmaputra Mail collision

GUWAHATI, Jan 11 � Five persons were killed and nine more were injured when the Delhi-bound 14055 Dn Brahmaputra Mail collided with a stationary goods train close to Sahibganj station around 5.50 am today. One sleeper coach of the train derailed in the accident.

Those who died in the accident include, Bijoy Roy of 4th Battalion of Assam Rifles, Giriya Devi (55), Dinesh Mahaldar (50), Narendra (38), and male person aged around 25, who is yet to be identified, an NFR press release stated.

The Railway Ministry has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the next of kin of the deceased in the accident under Malda Division of Eastern Railway. The Ministry has also announced an ex-gratia of Rs.50,000 to the seriously injured and Rs.10,000 to the passengers who had received minor injuries.

Six on-duty staff including RK Paswan, driver of the goods train, AK Singh, assistant driver of goods train, Ajay Kumar, guard of the goods train, AN Yadav, loco inspector (Sahibganj), Aniruddh Kumar, assistant station master of Karanpurato station and Neeraj Kumar, porter of Karanpurato station have been suspended as a disciplinary action.
