5 killed in Bongaigaon bus mishap

BONGAIGAON, March 19 � Five persons died and 25 others were injured when a bus, travelling at high speed, lost control and fell into a gorge beside National Highway 31 at North Salmara part-1 in Bongaigaon district around 7.55 am today.

The bus was going from Dhubri to Goalpara with 35 passengers.

�Our bus lost control soon after overtaking a car and rammed into the railing of a bridge and fell into the gorge,� said an injured passenger Sujit Mandal, resident of Bahalpur in Dhubri.

The deceased have been identified as Rehana Begum (32), her daughter Mehjebin (3), residents of Malegarh in Bongaigaon, Sujit Das (22), resident of Bilasipara in Dhubri, Sorobinda Ray (42), resident of Boitamari in Bongaigaon and Gofuruddin Sekh (53), resident of Boitamari in Bongaigaon.

The injured, including the driver and the handyman of the ill-fated bus were hospitalised in Bongaigaon.

Locals rescued the injured passengers and rush them to hospitals by private vehicles before the arrival of ambulance and police at the site.
