5 killed, 14 injured in oil tanker mishap

BONGAON (DERGAON), May 31 � Five persons were killed and fourteen others received burn injuries when a tanker (AS-01-K- 6257) carrying 12,000 litres of naptha from Digboi to Guwahati turned turtle and later burst into flames after a low tension wire fell on it, at Bongaon near here on NH-37 around 4 am today.

According to information available as the tanker overturned a few roadside trees and a low tension wire which was not conveying electricity at that moment, came crashing down along with it. But later when the people of the neighbourhood were about to siphon off oil from the tanker, electricity suddenly passed through the low tension wire and instantly burst into flames, killing four persons on the spot. The fifth victim identified as Rajib Borah (28) succumbed to his injuries as he was being shifted to the AMC in Dibrugarh.

The four others killed in the incident were identified as Mintu Baruah (28), Paban Borah (38), Kunu Bhuyan (60) and Ajijul Haque (30).

Fire tenders from Bokakhat, Dergaon, NRL and Golaghat brought the flame under control after five hours.
