5 in police net during drive against drug peddlers

GUWAHATI, May 27 - Continuing with its offensive against drug peddlers, Latasil police late last night apprehended five persons from a house at Uzanbazar.

Among the five men was actor Niren Sarma, who had acted in some popular Assamese films. Along with Sarma, police also apprehended Himangshu Hazarika, Siddhartha Medhi, Mahendra Nath and Ibrahim Ali.

Officer-in-charge of Latasil Police Station Upen Kalita said the five persons were apprehend from the residence of Niren Sarma. Brown sugar drugs in ten ampoules were recovered from the spot.

Meanwhile, Commissioner of Police Deepak Kumar today organised a sensitisation programme on narcotics with officers-in-charge of all police stations of the city, where psychiatrists and officials of CID also took part.

�We are going to build up a roadmap to eliminate drug abuse from Guwahati. The initiative will be implemented on a mission mode. Our aim is to eliminate all selling points of illegal drugs from Guwahati, for which policing will be strengthened through sensitisation. Our teams will also carry out awareness about substance abuse among public and will emphasise rehabilitation of drug addicts,� the Commissioner of Police said.
