GUWAHATI, March 9 � Five persons, including two women, died in the last 48 hours in different areas of the capital city.
While two women, identified as Bitomoni Rai and Nazneen Hussain, died in two different road mishaps that occurred on Thursday in Maligaon and Khanapara areas respectively on the day of Holi, Rupam Deka, a 23-year-old youth drowned in the river Brahmaputra near Dharapur around 1:30 pm on the same day. His body was recovered three hours after he went missing in the river. Rupam went to take a bath along with five of his friends when the incident took place.
Another youth was also allegedly murdered and the body was recovered in the Hatigaon area on Thursday morning.
Meanwhile, one Kamal Das, aged about 24, died after he drowned in a pond located in Azara area around 3:30 pm today.
Police said that the incident that led to the death of Bitimoni Rai was the fallout of drunk-driving. The deceased, who was riding on a CBZ bike along with two other youths, fell from the bike, which was speeding towards Jalukbari area. There were some other bikers who were indulging in a race under the influence of alcohol.
Moreover, Nazneen Hussain, a faculty of GNIIT, died after the bike she was pillion riding with her fianc�, was hit by a four-wheeler near Khanapara leading to her death on the spot.
Meanwhile, according to police sources, more than 30 incidents of road mishaps were reported from across the city on Thursday. Most of them took place because of drunk driving.
According to GVKEMRI (108), over 200 cases of road mishaps were reported in the last 48 hours from all over the State, of which over 110 were reported today.
