5 extortionists lynched in Garo Hills

TURA, July 15 � In two separate incidents, five extortionists were lynched today near Rongjeng in East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.

The lynching happened in two separate places, but it was the same group of people who had initially come to the remote Jambal village under Rongjeng. While two of the victims have been identified, the other three remain unidentified.

The second lynching incident took place in the village of Silchang Gittim, about three kms away from the place of the first lynching. Reportedly, the second group of victims were those who had escaped from the first incident of lynching.

According to reports from Rongjeng, where the five were lynched, a group of about seven dacoits had come to the village of Jambal, about one km from Rongjeng and demanded money from villagers at gunpoint. They brandished small weapons and pointed it at the villagers.

Angry villagers ghearoed them but the seven member group fired in the air scare the crowd. However, the crowd immediately caught three of them and beat them to death. The incident happened at about 2 pm today. Four from the group managed to flee from the mob.

However, two from the group were caught in Silchang Gittim and killed by the villagers. The two killed in Silchang have been identified as Josua Momin and Sengba Sangma.

The SP East Garo Hills Davis Marak said,��We have been informed that a group of dacoits tried to extort money

from the villagers yesterday night by threatening them with small weapons. The angry villagers retaliated and three were killed while the rest fled�.

According to latest reports, the Rongjeng police have rushed to the spot to recover the bodies. About two months ago, a similar incident had left three extortionists were killed in North Garo Hills near Adokgre and another two were lynched in South Garo Hills, indicating pent up anger of villagers coming to the fore in most places in Garo Hills.
