47,636 river islanders hit by floods in Majuli

JORHAT, June 28 - The flood situation in Majuli remained unchanged on the fourth day today with the number of people affected by the flood waters increasing to 47,636 among 9,468 families, spreading over 68 villages.

A Majuli district administration official informed this evening that 38 flood-hit people were taking shelter at two relief camps opened at Korotipar High School and Paschim Ahotguri High School respectively.

The official said that 42 schools across the Brahmaputra river island were submerged by flood waters.

Distribution of relief material among the flood-hit people by the district administration was under way, the official stated, adding that two teams on boats were distributing relief material in remote areas of Majuli, including the sandbars under Ahotguri and Dakhin Ahotguri Gaon Panchayats since the past three days.
