45 hurt in police baton charge

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, March 6 - At least 45 picketers, including 15 women, were injured when police resorted to lathi-charge, burst tear gas shells and fired rubber bullets to disperse the agitators who were staging a blockade on the national highway at Sidli in Chirang district today.

The United Organisation Co-ordination Committee, a joint forum of four non-tribal student groups (All Koch Rajbongshi Students Union, All Assam Gorkha Students Union, All Santhal Students Union and All Nath Jogi Students Union) had called a 24-hour BTAD shutdown protesting the BTCs new land policy which goes against the land rights of non-tribal communities residing in BTAD.

Chirang SP Yuvraj told the media that to remove the blockade, police had to apply mild force on the picketers after they started pelting stones on the vehicles.

Police detained four picketers in Chirang district during the strike.
