42nd year of Theatre Binapani of Baniyakuchi

By Correspondent

BARPETA, July 19 - Theatre is the most powerful force to influence the society and dramatists are the pathfinders. This was the view expressed by student leader Gunajit Choudhury on the occasion of inaugural ceremony of the 42nd year of Theatre Binapani celebrations at Baniyakuchi in Barpeta district last evening.

The ex-president of Barpeta subdivision students union lamented that now-a-days theatre is regarded as a means of entertainment only. He lauded the role of mobile theatre groups in Assam in respect of their contribution towards social, economic and cultural development of the State.

Chakreswar Deka, Chittaranjan Barman, Abhay Barman and a host of dignitaries also addressed the meeting which was chaired by Kripanath Deka, retired assistant headmaster Sarukshetri High School. Earlier, rich tributes were paid to Ramdas Barman, the owner of Theatre Binapani who left for his heavenly abode on April 6 this year after more than 50 years of association with the mobile theatre.

It may be mentioned here that Binapani Natya Samaj was the brain child of the culturally rich people of Baniyakuchi. It was owned and managed by the elite section of people of the village for several years during the early 70s.

But due to some technical reasons, it was later handed over to late Ramdas Barman, who managed it after facing all odds. After his death, his son Pranab Barman took over the charge. He assured that he will not deviate from the ideology of his late father and of the people, who sowed the seeds of organised dramatic activities in the backward area.
