400 candidates shortlisted for employment at job fair

GUWAHATI, May 12: Of the 1,000 candidates who participated in a daylong inclusive job fair cum counselling session to strengthen the public employment system, more than 400 candidates were shortlisted for jobs and 200 candidates were shortlisted for free skill development training. The job fair was organised in the city on Wednesday by the Vocational Rehabilitation Center for Handicapped, where more than 250 differently abled persons took part.

As part of the National Career Service Scheme of the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment, VRC, located at Gopinath Nagar in the city, has been converted into a model career centre (MCC). The scheme envisages bringing job seekers, employers, counsellors and training providers on the same platform by transforming and strengthening public employment service within the country with efficient use of information technology.

Though the VRC organises job fairs for the PWD regularly, the first ever inclusive job fair was held this time in association with Byatikram Masdo to offer more job options to educated youths by bringing the prospective employers under one roof.

�It was a successful event where a large number of candidates took part and had interactions with the employers. The Assam Gramin Vikash Bank and Assam Co-operative Apex Bank Limited also took part in the event to support the students,� said Debashree Bhattacharyya, rehabilitation officer of the VRC.

Altogether 29 companies, including Scholar Academy Education Trust, Zaloni, Hinduja Global Solutions, P&G, ICICI Academy of Skills, HDFC Bank, Airtel, Axis Bank, Radisson Blue, International Hospital, Narayana Hospital among others took part in the event.

SS Singh, Chairman of AGVB, while speaking as the chief guest, assured of financial assistance to the candidates. He exhorted the persons with disabilities to come forward and claim their space in society. �Other than jobs, there are options of self-employment through entrepreneurship, SHGs etc., and we are ready to help in this regard,� he said.
