ITANAGAR, Nov 20 - Four under-trial prisoners (UTPs), lodged at the district jail at Jully Basti, 6 kms away from here, are on the run after a jailbreak early this morning.

Following the incident, 10 jail wardens, including a chief warden in the rank of ASI and one head warden, were suspended on the charges of dereliction of duty. A manhunt to re-arrest the escapees has also been launched, according to SP (Jail) Michi Paku.

The escapees have been identified as Hiba Tajuk, a habitual offender involved in a series of bank dacoity cases, and the trio of Raju Pegu, Dora Sanjay and Manoj Phukan involved in the (Naharlagun trader) KP Chacko abduction and murder case, he said. Tajuk was arrested by Itanagar police only last month besides eight others along with arms and ammunition as he was planning to rob a bank in the Capital Complex.

The jailbreak incident, apparently took place between 3 am- 4 am, was noticed when the sentry on duty started head count of inmates.

The SP (Jail) informed that the UTPs broke open the window rod of the ward they were lodged in and then connected two pieces of timber (for use as firewood) with the help of blankets to escape from the jail compound by scaling the wall of the prison.

The SP further divulged that Tajuks fiance had visited the jail yesterday and reportedly handed him over some cash to facilitate him hire a vehicle to flee after the jailbreak.

An alert has been sounded across the Assam-Arunachal border area to re-arrest the culprits. All the 10 suspended jail wardens have been taken into custody by the Itanagar police.
