4-storeyed house in Aizawl collapses

By CORRESPONDENT

AIZAWL, June 29 - A four-storeyed building at Hunthar locality in west Aizawl that has been in danger due to land subsidence since a year back finally collapsed today. The building collapsed around 2.30 pm while demolition was under way. However, there were no human casualties as workers had sensed danger and moved to safety, hours before it collapsed, the police said.

On June 10, Aizawl DC Dr A Muthamma, who is also the chairman of the Aizawl District Disaster Management Authority, issued an order to demolish the building. Before the demolition order was issued, there was heavy erosion of the foundation soil and the staircase of the building was hanging without any support.

Eight families occupying the building and another building lying in the vicinity were evacuated.
