GUWAHATI, May 22 - In a shocking incident, four policemen were arrested on charges of harassing and extorting two youths on the Bhangagarh-Kahilipara hill route last night.

The incident created a flutter in the police department after the victim girl narrated the incident on social media and shared it on the Assam Police Facebook page.

According to the girls post, she and her friend were travelling in their car from Bhangagarh to Kahilipara around 8.30 pm.

After we crossed the GMCH girls hostel, my friend suddenly realised that his phone was missing. To look for his phone, he stopped the car for a minute. In the meantime, a patrol team from Bhangagarh Police Station came and started asking us many awkward questions, she said.

The police team allegedly asked questions like why they were travelling in that time of the day. They also misbehaved with us using slang language, and refused to listen to our explanation, she said.

Then the policemen asked us for the RC and licence, which we showed them. One of the policemen, after verification of the documents, suddenly snatched the same and asked us to accompany them to the PS. My friend and I argued as to why we should go to the PS for no fault of ours. We tried to convince them, but they again misbehaved with us and threatened us by saying bol bol PS bol tat gole gom pabi tohtor ki hobo, tat amar media o ase (come to the PS and you will know what will happen to you, we have our media also there) The cops then took my friend to the side of the road and said the case could be compromised if we gave them some money. My friend then wanted to know for what crime we should pay up, to which one of the policemen replied that we had stopped the car in the area, she said.

The police team forced the youths to pay Rs 1,000 after which the vehicle documents were returned.

As the incident brought embarrassment to the police after it was spread in the social media, heads rolled within hours.

DCP (East) Dr Ramandeep Kaur told The Assam Tribune that four police personnel have been arrested. Appropriate action is being taken. They would be suspended too, she said.

The accused were identified as havildar Halathar Ramchiary, constable Deepjyoti Saloi, constable Sibendra Bhuyan and home guard Suren Kalita.

In a second social media post later, the victim girl expressed gratitude to Assam Police for the swift action, particularly Police Commissioner Deepak Kumar, DCP Kaur and the cyber cell.
