4 cops, civilian driver killed in GNLA ambush

TURA, Oct 31 � Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) militants laid a daring ambush on East Garo Hills police team at Nengpatchi village, 4 kms from Dobu on Monday afternoon killing four policemen and their civilian driver before decamping with their weapons.

The police patrol team was waylaid at 4.30 pm by the armed GNLA militants who lay in wait for the police team travelling in a vehicle. The militants opened indiscriminate fire on the police leading to the death of four police men and their civilian driver.

The militants took away two AK-47 rifles, a carbine and two SLR rifles from the police team along with a large cache of assorted ammunition from them.

The policemen who died in the ambush have been identified as Constable N R Marak, Havildar Probinson Sangma, Havildar Victor Marak, constable E Sangma and the civilian driver who is yet to be identified. Two constables identified as Peter Sangma and D Sangma sustained bullet injuries. They have been taken to Tura for treatment, it is reported.
