393 AIDS patients in Barpeta district

BARPETA, Dec 1 - There are 393 patients in Barpeta district suffering from AIDS. This was informed by Dr Gunin Das, District Aids Control Officer here today. Addressing a meeting held here on the occasion of the World AIDS Day, Das said that all the patients are being given �Antiretroviral Therapy� in Fakharuddin Ali Ahmed Medical College here regularly which has enabled them to continue their fight against the disease. Dr Das also informed that 21,220 persons are suffering from AIDS in the State.

Addressing the meeting as the chief guest, Deputy Commissioner Munindra Sarma urged the people to be alert against AIDS like they remain alert against COVID-19. Stating that though the fight against COVID-19 may not be a long one, Sarma said that people across the globe have been witnessing the plight of AIDS patients for years together.

Sarma appealed to the people not to neglect or despise the AIDS patients but treat them with compassion.

The meeting organised by the Health department of the district was also addressed by Sabyasashi Kashyap, Additional Deputy commissioner, Dr Tirthanath Sarma, Joint Director of Health and Bikash Sarma, District Information and Public Relation Officer. The meeting was conducted by Amirul Islam, District Project Officer of National Health Mission, Barpeta.

A procession by Health workers and ASHA workers to create awareness on AIDS was taken out from Tarun Ram Phookan Hall after the meeting, which went through the main thoroughfares of the town.
