353 acute encephalitis syndrome deaths in State till Dec 24 this year

GUWAHATI, Dec 25 - Altogether 2,652 cases of acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) have been reported across the state till December 24 this year, with 353 of those resulting in death. Altogether 1,160 more AES cases were reported in the State this year in comparison to last year, sources in the State health department said.

This year, the highest number of AES cases (601) was reported in Dibrugarh district, followed by Kamrup Metro (241) and Lakhimpur (167) districts. The death toll in these three districts was 42, nine and 20 respectively.

Meanwhile, altogether 641 cases of Japanese encephalitis (JE) have been reported this year with 161 resultant deaths. In 2018, the number of reported JE cases was 509 and the death toll was 94.

This year, the highest cases of JE have been reported in Lakhimpur (50) followed by Nagaon (45) and Sivasagar (45) districts. Goalpara and Kamrup districts recorded the highest number of JE deaths (13 each).

In case of malaria, 1,317 positive cases have been reported across the State till December 24 this year, with three of those resulting in death. The highest number of positive malaria cases (407) have been reported in Kokrajhar district followed by Udalguri (362) and Karbi Anglong (87) districts. Two people died of malaria in Karimganj and one person died in Barpeta district.

This year, the State health department collected 38,71,561 blood samples across the State to test for malaria. After testing, 794 samples were detected with plasmodium falciparum and 523 were detected with plasmodium vivax. On December 24, one case of plasmodium falciparum was reported in Goalpara district.

Last year 3,816 cases of malaria were reported in Assam with two of those resulting in death.

On the other hand, till December 24 this year, altogether 177 cases of dengue have been reported in Assam. The highest 69 dengue cases have been reported in Kamrup (Metro) district, followed by Jorhat (13) and Barpeta (11) districts. No dengue death has been reported in the State so far this year.

In 2018, altogether 166 dengue cases were reported with none of those resulting in death.

Till December 24 this year, 14 cases of filaria have been reported in Assam with no death. Among these cases, 12 have been reported in Goalpara district and two in Golaghat district. No chikungunya and kala azar cases were reported in the State this year.
