352 villages affected by flood in Barpeta

BARPETA, Sept 4 - Flood situation in Barpeta district still remains to be critical and according to government estimate 352 villages have been affected in the district so far.

According to official sources, 105 in Baghbar, 50 in Kalgachia, 75 in Sarthebari, 23 in Sarupeta, 37 in Barpeta, 53 in Chenga, 8 in Bajali and 1 village in Barnagar Revenue Circle have been affected by flood.

The official estimate counts the number of population at 2.35 lakh in the affected eight circles the highest being in Sarthebari Revenue Circles at 95,000.

Till now six hundred people have sheltered in three relief camps two in Baghbar with 300 inmates and one in Sarthebari with 300 inmates.

The district administration has supplied relief materials to the affected people today. Altogether 1,311.42 quintal of rice, 232 quintals of dal and 913 quintals of fodder had been supplied to the worst affected Sarthebari circle.

In Sarthebari Revenue Circle especially the Paka Mouza had been badly affected by the flood this year. Rivers namely Pahumara, Kaldia, Tihu and Burhadia had breach its embankment in several places making lives miserable in Paka Mouza and in some parts of Sarukshetri and Betbari Mouza.

The role of public representatives have been severely criticised by the people in Barpeta district. Though lakh of people are reeling under severe flood for a long time neither the MLA of Sarukshetri Constituency, Ali Hussain nor the MP of Barpeta, Chirazuddin Azmal have visited the area till now. Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti has burnt the effigy of these two leaders at Batia on Thursday last.
