3.5 lakh hit by flood in Goalpara district

GUWAHATI, Sept 28 � Around 3.5 lakh people of Goalpara district have been hit by the devastating floods, which claimed 20 lives. More than 73,000 affected people are still staying in 100 relief camps in the district.

An official release said that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today visited different relief camps set up in the worst affected areas of the district and spoke to the inmates about the problems faced by them. He instructed the officials to provide all necessary assistance to them.

Gogoi also held a meeting with Water Resources Minister Rajib Lochan Pegu, Additional Chief Secretary SC Das and other senior officials to review the situation and said the administration should take prompt action to repair the roads and bridges. He said efforts should be made to reconstruct the houses that were completely damaged, while the affected people should be provided opportunities to work under the MGNREGA. He said the damaged roads and bridges should be repaired on a priority basis.
