34-member team from State visits Chinese varsities

JALUKBARI, April 22 - A 34-member team of college principals, university and college teachers and research scholars from Assam led by Prof Jogen Chandra Kalita recently visited three Chinese universities, two in Kunming and one in Beijing under the aegis of the India China Alliance for Cooperation (ICAC), New Delhi.

The main objective of the visit was to understand the functioning of the higher education system in China and to develop research collaboration between Chinese universities and universities and colleges in Assam.

The team visited Yunan Minzu University (YMU), where Dr Yang Hongyan, Vice Dean of Yunan Minzu University International School welcomed them and informed them about different opportunities and courses run by YMU for foreign students. The delegation was accorded a warm reception by the students and faculty members of the Hindi department of YMU.

The team also visited the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Biotechnology Laboratories and attended a class on Chinese conducted by a Chinese language teacher at YMU.

The team also visited the Kunming Institute on Botany (KIB) in Kunming with which the Gauhati University had signed an MoU in 2016.

At KIB Prof Jianchu Xu welcomed the delegation and talked at length on recent research achievements and future scopes for collaboration. He encouraged the delegation from Assam to work with KIB scientists on ecology, agroforestry, edible mushroom research, etc.

Dr Baomin Fan, Professor of YMU and Hong Kong Baptist University and Deputy Director, Joint Laboratory of Traditional Natural Medicine also spoke on the occasion.

The delegation also visited the Renming University.
