31 Bangladeshis detained at Guwahati railway station

GUWAHATI, Oct 15 - As many as 31 suspected Bangladeshi nationals, including eight women and 13 minors, who had illegally entered India around two years back, were detained at the Guwahati railway station this morning.

The Government Railway Police (GRP) detained them from platform number one while they were about to board the Kanchenjunga Express for Agartala.

�They could not produce any documents to prove their Indian nationality and later confessed that they hail from Bagerhat district of Bangladesh,� GRP sources said.

During preliminary questioning, the Bangladeshi nationals said that after entering India around two years back, they had gone to Bengaluru where they got engaged in some petty works.

�They reached Guwahati yesterday by the Bangalore Express and spent the night at the railway station itself. They were planning to go back to Bangladesh via Agartala,� Deputy Superintendent of Police (GRP) Iftekar Ali said.

The arrested 18 adults have been identified as Md Suleman Sorewar, Md Jamal, Shimul Begum, Salma Begum, Md Masum, Minara Khatun, Dulal Mia, Hanufa Begum, Alam Khan, Md Jahangir, Aesa Begum, Md Babu, Md Shar Alam, Shahinur Akhtar, Raju Hawaldar, Hasan Biswas, Tajinur Begum and Shiuli Begum.

The GRP has registered a case (279/2018) under section 14 of the Foreigners Act along with other relevant sections of the Passport Act. All the 31 suspected Bangladeshi nationals were taken for medical examination today and they will be produced before the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Kamrup tomorrow.

Additional Director General of Police (Border) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta told The Assam Tribune that the accused would be booked under the relevant sections of the law for illegally entering the country. �Once the court proceedings are over, their repatriation process would be taken care of as per laid down norms,� he added.
