30 lakh new Cong members: Anjan

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 8 Over 30 lakh people have taken membership of the Congress party in Assam during the ongoing special drive.

Speaking to reporters here yesterday, APCC president Anjan Dutta said that 30.35 lakh new members have been inducted into the party in Assam during the last financial year which ended on March 31.

The special drive will continue till April 15. Before the latest drive, Congress already had 42 lakh members in the State.

So our total membership has now gone up to over 72 lakh. And unlike the missed-call membership of BJP, in Congress all members have to submit a filled-up form along with a photo and all details are then verified by the booth committee. Also, membership is only allotted at the booth where the individual has his name in the voters list, Dutta said.

He added that the process of conducting Congress organisational polls in Assam will start on May 30 and the entire process would be concluded by September 30. The new APCC president will be elected by September 30.

The polls will be in phases, starting with elections for the booth committees, followed by block committees, district committees and then APCC. Asked about the BTAD polls, Dutta said the Congress is confident of winning at least 8-10 seats.
