30 injured in lathicharge

DIBRUGARH, Nov 13 � Over 30 agitating youths, who blocked the National Highway 37 in front of the Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL) township demanding cent per cent employment for local youths in the BCPL, sustained injuries in a police lathicharge when they staged road blockade on NH37 for about two hours today.

The seriously injured include Jayanta Das, Karuna Hazarika and Partho Dutta.

However, police denied any lathicharge on the protesters. �Police had to go after them only after they became disruptive on the busy highway, causing prolonged traffic snarls at both ends. They were invited for a discussion on the wayside but they did not participate,� Additional Superintendent of Police Hiranya Barman said.

The youths comprised members from Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad, Asomiya Yuva Manch, Hindu Yuva Parishad, Brihotor Asomiya Yuva Manch, All Assam Koiborta Yuva Chatra Sanmilan, Assam Scheduled Caste Yuva Chatra Sanmilan, All Assam Deori Students� Union, Unemployed Youth Association and few others.
