DIBRUGARH, Feb 12 - Oil India Ltd (OIL) has adopted three one-horned rhino calves which were orphaned earlier during the devastating floods of July 2016. The three rhino calves have recently been relocated to the Manas National Park from the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC), near Bokakhat. Upon translocation, these rhinos will be shifted to an acclimatization site where they will spend the next one year developing site fidelity before being released in the National Park.
Oil India Ltd under its CSR initiative took up this cause by being first the PSU to fully support the raising and rehabilitation of the three orphaned rhinos at the CWRC for almost two and half years till the time they grew up and ready for translocation.
Oil has committed a total financial assistance of Rs 50 lakh towards this initiative for a period of four years starting from the time of adoption till the rhinos are ready to be released in their natural habitat.
As per the records of CWRC, the names of the youngest rhino are Dubi (female), Chili (female) and Balu (male). These three names are based on the place of rescue of each rhino.
Of the three, two were earlier �adopted� by singers Zubeen Garg and Priyanka Bharali. But they forgot their adoptions after the media photo shoot, it is reliably learnt. One reason could be the high cost of maintaining rhino calves, which is at least Rs 50,000 per month per calf.
