GUWAHATI, May 25 - Gauhati Commerce College (GCC) excelled in the Higher Secondary Final exams with three positions in the merit list and 100 per cent success rate. Students of the college also secured the State highest marks in accountancy, and commercial mathematics and statistics.
While its students secured the third, fourth and fifth positions, a total of 295 out of 434 students got first division and 89 of them got star marks.
To ensure better individual attention to each student, the college would now reduce the number of seats in the HS course to 300 from the present 450 seats.
Ranked among the topmost colleges for commerce studies in the North East, GCC, for the first time in its history, achieved 100 per cent success rate. Last year, the college secured two positions and 98.8 per cent success.
Neha Agarwalla, the third position holder with 465 marks, wants to become a chartered accountant. She will also study for her graduation at GCC. �I studied four to five hours regularly since the beginning. I also took tuitions for most of the subjects, which provides assistance in studies,� she said.
In her free time, Neha loves to sketch and read comics. �If we set rules for using mobile phones and social media, it doesn�t affect studies. It�s up to the discretion of the user,� she added.
GCC principal Dr Homeswar Kalita said he had expected better results in terms of ranks, but was satisfied with the overall performance. �We put our best efforts to guide and assist the students. Our teachers work very hard. Next year, we would try to improve the results,� he said.
�We have three sections for the HS course � each section having 150 students. From now on, each section would have 100 seats,� he said.
Arunabh Nath, who secured the fourth position with 461 marks, shared the credit of his success with his parents, teachers and friends. �Consistency is the key and if the concepts are clear from the beginning, it boosts the confidence,� said Arunabh, a resident of Hengrabari who loves Marvel Comics and playing cricket.
Another topper, Rahul Roy (460) is not very fond of outdoor sports. A brilliant student throughout his school life, Rahul loves books, especially crime thrillers, Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes being his favourite. �I want to complete my BCom and prepare for a government sector job,� Roy said.
Celebrations started in the college campus as soon as the results were announced. College students cheered the toppers, while the rank holders were felicitated by the teachers, and students� union. A small procession celebrating the success of the college was also taken out within the campus.
