3 killed in Daporijo fire

By Correspondent

ITANAGAR, Feb 12 Three persons, including a pregnant woman and her two daughters, were burnt alive and six others sustained partial burn injuries in a huge fire that occurred at Sigin Colony in Daporijo under Upper Subansiri district on Sunday.

Several houses were gutted in the inferno rendering more than 100 families homeless.

Expressing grief over the death of three persons, Chief Minister Nabam Tuki on Tuesday announced an ex gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased. He also directed the Relief Department to assess the loss of properties and provide relief assistance to all the victims as per official norms.

Mourning the death of the pregnant woman and her daughters, Tuki prayed for strength to the bereaved family members to bear the loss.

The Chief Minister, meanwhile, appealed to the people to take preventive and safety measures to avoid such incidents. He expressed concern that despite repeated appeals, people hardly pay attention to safety measures while installing power connections and burning candles, kerosene lamps and fireplaces in their homes.

Fire mishaps are the result of our own carelessness, and therefore, we need to voluntarily take preventive measures for our own good, Tuki said in a statement today.

He also directed the district administrations to create awareness in respective districts especially in areas and colonies prone to such mishaps, besides keeping fire- fighting machineries on high alert during the winter season and power blackouts.
