3 IRB jawans shot dead by colleague

IMPHAL, June 6 � In a bizarre incident, three personnel of Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) deployed at Maphou Dam located in the border of Imphal East and Ukhrul districts, were shot dead by an IRB personnel at the dam site on Tuesday.

The IRB personnel who shot dead three of his colleagues later shot himself dead with his service weapon.

The incident occurred at Maphou dam where six IRB personnel were posted at around 2.30 pm. The killed IRB personnel have been identified as Thokchom Birbal, Khamjathang and Haorengbam Deven. The guilty IRB personnel identified as rifleman Kaikhohao was reported by eyewitnesses to be drunk at the time of the shooting.

He is reported to have entered his barrack and started to load his weapon and then shooting indiscriminately. The IRB personnel ran for shelter when the shooting started, but havildars Birbal and Deven who were resting on their beds were hit by the indiscriminate firing and died on the spot while havidar Khamjathang was also hit in the firing and succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
