GUWAHATI, March 21 - Police today arrested three persons � Dimbeswar Das (31), Joyram Das (42) and Shyam Charan Pathak (40) � in connection with the brutal rape and murder of a college student in Indrapur-Chegunbagan area of Noonmati on March 15.
All the three persons were married men with families and were known to the family of the deceased. The three were casual workers along with the father of the deceased at Gauhati Refinery. They had, ironically, also taken part at protest demonstrations by local residents, demanding arrest of the culprits involved in the heinous crime.
Addressing a press conference, Ranjan Bhuyan, DCP (Central), Rubul Gogoi, ADCP (Central) and Hemanta Neog, ACP (Central), said that police first arrested Dimbeswar Das and following his confession, arrested Jayram Das. Police got the clear picture after interrogating the duo and later arrested Shyam Charan Pathak.
Police said that the trio raped the girl while she was returning home through a forested stretch in the evening. Thereafter they strangulated her. Dimbeswar Das, Joyram Das and the father of the deceased were neignbours at Indrapur. Shyam Charan Pathak was a resident of Bishnupur, Noonmati.
