3 held for providing SIM cards to ultras

DIPHU, Feb 7 � Dokmoka police on Monday apprehended three persons from three different places of Nagaon and Karbi Anglong districts for supplying SIM cards to the Karbi Anglong-based militant outfit Karbi Peoples Liberation Tiger (KPLT).

A number of illegal mobile SIM cards of Airtel and Aircel telecom service providers were recovered from Nagaon JR Electronic, a mobile phone repairing centre. To obtain mobile SIM card no documents are required to be submitted to the respective telecom franchisees. A subscriber can avail a mobile SIM card for just Rs 180.

The three persons who were arrested on charges of illegal supply of SIM cards to the KPLT were identified as Mohammad Jakir Hussain (30) of Islampatti in Nagoan district, Narayan Prasad (45) of Rong Tara near Bamoni under Dokmoka Police Station and Bhugeswar Teron (35) of Singnargaon Ripilangso Thedong area under Dokmoka PS.

According to the statement Narayan Prasad made before the police, KPLT had demanded Rs 3000 from him. When Narayan refused to cough up the money, KPLT subsequently asked him to provide the outfit with ten SIM cards, which Narayan did.

The prime accused involved in the case was Mahammad Jakir Hussain who owns the mobile repairing store JR Electronic, which is located hardly 200-300 metres from Nagaon Sadar Police Station.

The third accused Bhugeswar Teron had submitted two mobile handsets along with the SIM cards to KPLT. According to his statement made before the police, he was given Rs 11,000 to purchase mobile handsets from Nagaon. Accordingly he purchased two handsets from a mobile shop at Nagoan and later handed them over along with the SIM cards received from Narayan Prasad to one Karsa Teron who is reported to be a top leader of the KPLT.
