3 arrested in coal mine tragedy

SHILLONG, July 11 � Three persons have been arrested by the Meghalaya police while another is absconding for causing the death of 15 labourers inside a coal mine at Nengkul in Rongsa Awe of Nangalbibra on July 6 last.

According to South Garo Hills additional deputy commissioner RP Marak, the arrested include the Nokma, Kudon A Sangma, mine developer, Gurdeep Singh, and head of the labourers identified only as �captain�.

�We have booked them under Section 304 (causing death by negligence) of IPC,� Marak informed.

Meanwhile, another person, identified as Vashith, helper of Singh, was still absconding.

Moreover, two teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) from Assam have been rushed to the disaster site to aid in the rescue operations.

The NDRF personnel have moved from their base in Guwahati and are on their way to the place of incident.

According to reports at the time of the incident 30 labourers were engaged in extracting coal from a mine belonging to the Nokma of Rongsa Awe, Kudon A Sangma.

Singh, a mine developer was cautioned by people in the area not to engage his labourers in the extracting coal from the mine due to the monsoon, but he allegedly disregarded the warning causing the death of the labourers.
