2nd phase of panchayat elections peaceful

GUWAHATI, Feb 6 � Polling in the second phase of Panchayat election held in the State today was by and large peacefull. Our Staff Correspondent and Correspondents add:

DIBRUGARH: Panchayat poll in the district concluded smoothly with 70 per cent turnout in the second phase today. The first phase of the panchayat polls held on January 30 had recorded 72 per cent polling.

The results of both the phases will be known after the counting on February 14 and 15. District Election Officer, Biswajit Phukan said that polling was conducted peacefully and expressed satisfaction with the turnout of voters.

Tezpur: Polling for the second phase of panchayat election in Sonitpur district ended peacefully with approximately 60 per cent turnout.

However, a few stray incidents of violence were reported from Bihali. According to police the vice president of Bihali Block Congress Jiban Borah was injured along with four of his associates when miscreants attacked them at Bihali Than LP School under Bihali ps.

At Baghmari under Biswanath Charilai PS a clash between Congress and BJP workers was reported.

Anomalies in printing of ballot papers were reported from Takoubari under Gohpur PS and Bokagaon under Rangapara PS. It is being alleged that at the Takoubari polling station the symbol of an independent candidate was printed as cycle instead of a bucket. At Bokagaon polling station the symbol of the AGP candidate was not printed in the ballot papers.

Polling was interrupted for more than two hours in Tezpur Dekargaonchuk L P School under Majgaon Gaon Panchayat due to mismanagement of voters� lists between two centres.

Meanwhile, the body of a Congress worker Jagat Nath who was supposed to be a polling agent of the party in today�s polling was recovered at Gereluwachul under Jamugurihat PS this morning, police informed.

Morigaon: About 70 per cent polling was reported in the second phase of panchayat election in Morigaon district today. Barring a few untoward incidents polling was by and large peaceful.

In Koulmoubari GP a supporter of Congress party was assaulted by some other party members leading to a tense situation. Security forces brought the situation under control.

NALBARI: Around 70 per cent voters of Nalbari district today cast their votes to select 793 panchayat representatives in the second phase of panchayat polls.

Except for three incidents of ballot paper anomalies polling was by and large peaceful in Nalbari district. According to the Returning Officer of Nalbari district repoll wll be held at No 4 Karia HS School polling booth and Barkhanajan LP School polling station due to anomalies in ballot papers.

At Mathurapu LP School polling was suspended for over two hours due to anomalies in ballot papers.

RANGIYA: The second phase of panchayat poll in seven ZPCs, 39 APs and GPS of Rangiya subdivision today was held peacefully with nearly 73 per cent of the voters casting their votes.

Meanwhile, at polling stations near Kaniha and Udiana, some confusion occurred among the voters regarding printing of symbols of candidates in the ballot papers.

jagiroad: About 79 per cent votes out of total electorate 3,25,813 of seven Zila Parishad constituencies namely, Dharamtul, Jagi Bhakat Gaon, Mayong, Dandua, Charaibahi, Bhurbandha and Sabukdhara in Morigaon district cast their votes in 514 polling stations in the second phase of the panchayat elections in violence-free polling.

Biswanath Chariali: The second phase of Panchayat election conducted today recorded around 79 per cent turnout at Biswanath and Gohpur subdivisions and it was by and large peaceful.
