SILCHAR, Oct 2 - As many as 27 persons, including three arrested on Thursday, have been held by the police in connection with the lynching of a truck driver, Sadid Ahmed Barbhuiya, at Moinargarh on September 30.

Cachar Additional Superintendent of Police Subhashini Sankaran today told media persons that the arrests were made after a raid at Moinargarh on Thursday night. Based on specific information, the police raided the area and picked up the persons allegedly involved in the lynching of the truck driver. Some policemen sustained grave injuries during the scuffle. The arrested were produced before the Special Court on Friday and later sent to judicial custody, Sankaran said, adding that some of them admitted during the trial that they were involved in the incident.

On the situation in the district, the Additional SP said that efforts are being made to restore peace ahead of the festive season. The police will closely monitor the situation to avert any untoward incident, the police officer added.

Meanwhile, the BJPs Cachar district unit has blamed the police for the brutal killing of the driver. Speaking to media persons, local MLA Dilip Paul said that if the police had been a little proactive, the driver could have been saved from the mob. He condemned the comments made by a section of political leaders, including Katigorah MLA Ataur Rahman Majharbhuiyan, in this regard. He also questioned as to how an MLA could host a meeting with more than 2,500 people in attendance when Section 144 of the CrPC was enforced across the district.

Terming the incident as unfortunate, veteran BJP leader and former MP Kabindra Purkayastha said that he had wanted to meet the families of both Sajid Ahmed Barbhuiya and Badal Saotal, who was run over by the former. But the district administration advised against it. BJP district president Kaushik Rai maintained that the families of both Sadid and Badal should be paid compensation.
