By Dalim Phukan

MORIGAON, Nov 9 - Altogether 265 families, who encroached government land at Hatimuria and Hiloikhunda under Mayong revenue circle in Morigaon district, were evicted by the administration today with all legal procedures.

Morigaon Deputy Commissioner Hemen Das told this correspondent that a joint eviction drive was carried out by the Morigaon and Darrang district administrations in the Mayong area where the illegal occupants had been living for months together.

The illegal settlers came from char areas of Darrang district and it led to resentment among the indigenous people.

The eviction process was completed peacefully and the evicted people went back to Gasbari char in Darrang district, official sources said. This is the major eviction drive, near Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary, after the eviction drive off Kaziranga National Park.

According to Mayong revenue circle officer Ananta Gogoi, though the vacant government land of Hiloikhunda is adjacent to Mayong, the area falls under the jurisdiction of Darrang district. The encroachers are voters of Mangaldai Assembly constituency and they have entered their names in the NRC update process.

The encroachment of the Hiloikhunda area along the bank of the Brahmaputra river was cleared today as per the instruction of the Revenue department of the State Government. The demarcation of the boundary between Darrang and Morigaon will be finalised soon to clear more encroached areas along the Brahmaputra bank.
