AGARTALA, Feb 26 At least 26 people including a policeman were injured during counting of votes of the 527 Village Committee elections in Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomus District Council (TTAADC) in Tripura today as the ruling Left Front maintained its winning spree capturing most of the seats.

At least 26 people including a policeman were injured when the supporters of the ruling CPI-M and opposition Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) hurled stones at each other at Jampuijala in West Tripura district, about 35 km from here, police said.

A police constable, identified as Ranjan Debbarma died of cardiac arrest on the spot due to tension.

Trouble started when the election result of Koloibari village after recounting went in favour of ruling CPI-M.

In the first round CPM had won the seat with a margin of only one vote against INPT. Recounting resulted in a tie and when the second recounting was conducted the seat went to CPM. The opposition INPT alleged conspiracy which led to pelting of stones, police said.

As the police personnel led by officer-in-charge of Takarjala police station sought to disperse the warring mobs, the officer-in-charge was hit on head by a stone. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition. Police then opened blank fire to disperse the mob.

The ruling CPI-M has already one-third of the 527 village committees and is far ahead of the opposition parties in many seats where counting is in progress, sources said. PTI
