25 States to vie for titles in school football

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 2 Altogether 25 State teams, including 17 girls, will fight it out for the title in the 60th National School Games Football Championship in boys and girls U-14 groups.

The State Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare will conduct the championship at five different venues here in the city from tomorrow. It will be a league-cum-knock out affair in both boys and girls categories.

Informing about the championship, Deputy Director Jatin Borchetia revealed in a press conference today that most of the teams have arrived in the city and are raring to go for the fight. The remaining teams will be arriving by tomorrow morning.

The championship will be conducted by a management group Curves & Shade. A representatives of the management group said that they will look after in creating an atmosphere in the venues by setting up hordings, etc. The Directorate of Sports, however, will not get anything from the management group, said Borchetia.

The matches will be played at Sarusajai sports complex, NF Railway ground, SAI complex, Delhi Public School and Royal Global School.

The organisers will spend Rs 15 lakh for hosting the event where about 800 players and officials will take part.

It appears that the State Sports Department has been organising various events of the National School Games very frequently and spending heavy amounts. But they are putting very less efforts in conducting coaching camps and school tournaments at the district level. The State Governments Sports Department also failed in providing quality sports goods and other facilities to the schools so that they can prepare athletes at the grassroot level.

On the other hand they are conducting the National School Games regularly which hardly anything for the betterment of sports.
