GUWAHATI, Oct 6 - More than 25 websites of Assam Government departments have been temporarily withdrawn in the last 24 hours after a hacker, believed to be located outside the country, hit the official website of the National Informatics Centre (NIC) at Dispur.

The affected websites include those belonging to Assam Police and Education Department, besides a number of important Government websites.

There are also reports that the hacker has even defaced a number of websites, thereby triggering a sense of apprehension among the law enforcers.

This is not the first time that websites in the State have been hacked by outside elements. Not too many months ago, a Pakistani hacking group had hacked the website of a number of e-commerce websites and an educational institute.

As all our Government websites are linked with NIC, we have decided to withdraw them. A case under the Information Technology Act will be registered by the Criminal Investigation Department tomorrow, official sources claimed. Sources further informed that a team of cyber experts are already working on the case.
