24-hour Tripura bandh today

By Correspondent

AGARTALA, Dec 11 - The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress (TPYC) has called a 24-hour Tripura bandh tomorrow to protest against the alleged unprovoked police assault on senior party leaders.

Youth Congress president Pujan Biswas today said that they are left with no other alternative but to call the bandh. He alleged that the police refused to give permission for a demonstration by the Pradesh Congress and when a procession was taken out with prior information between Kaman Chawmuhani and Post Office Chaumuhuni, the police launched an unprovoked and indiscriminate lathicharge. Five Congressmen, including PCCs ad hoc committee convener Pijush Biswas and senior leader Baptu Chakraborty, sustained injuries.

A sub-inspector of West Agartala Police Station and a few of his colleagues sustained minor injuries in the incident. Two TV journalists were also injured.

Later, speaking to media persons at the Congress Bhavan, PCC ad hoc committee convener Pijush Biswas said that they had no other alternative but to lodge their protest by calling a bandh tomorrow. We appeal to the people to support our bandh to send a strong message to the Government, he added.
