NALBARI, July 9 - While the poor farmers of agriculture-based Nalbari district have been demanding shallow pumps to carry out their agricultural activities, a total number of 220 shallow pumps have been lying unused at the godown of Agriculture department in Nalbari town.
Most of the shallow pumps have been damaged in the godown due to rain waters. The shallow pumps have been lying in the godown since 2007 due to the negligence of some senior officials. The shallow pumps branded as Indra Marshal have been kept locked at the office godown without being distributed to farmers.
The executive engineer of Nalbari Agriculture (engineering) department Bhagawan Kakati received the shallow pumps in 2007 but no agricultural officials took steps to distribute the pumps to the farmers. The present executive engineer of the Agriculture department working in the office has decided to return the shallow pumps to the company. The people suspect an act of conspiracy over the decision to send the pumps back to the company. On July 5, the department had kept the pumps ready to return them to the company.
