21-acre plot for proposed Nat�l Law School

NORTH GUWAHATI, June 30 � The Government of Assam has allotted a plot of land measuring 21 acres at Amingaon under the North Guwahati Revenue Circle for the proposed National Law School and Judicial Academy to be started from September.

The classes of the National Law School will be initially held at the Ulubari-based North East Judicial Officers� Training Institute till the construction works of the academy are completed.

Meanwhile, another plot of land required for the prestigious law school measuring 78 acres is also in the process of acquisition by the Government. Only 60 students of both sexes will be allowed to study in the first year of which 25 per cent of the seats will be for reserved categories of student.

The Government of Assam has sanctioned Rs 300 crore for the project including the cost of acquisition of the land for the project. Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had called on the Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court, Justice Madan B Lokur at the Circuit House recently and discussed with him matters regarding to the law school as the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court happens to be the president of the governing body of the proposed academy.

Annual session: The 38th annual session of the North Guwahati Wholesale Consumers� Society was held in the Lakshyadhar Choudhury memorial auditorium at Rongmahal recently.

About 200 shareholders and other invited persons attended the meeting. After the tribute paying programme in memory of the members of the Society who had passed away during the past year, the meeting was addressed by the president of the board of governors, Govinda Chandra Das. The secretary of the Society, Badan Chandra Bhuyan read out the annual report, describing the various steps taken to increase business during the year. It was pointed out that the Society earned a profit of Rs 1,05,000 during the year.

On the occasion, both the Government auditor and the internal auditor read out their respective reports for the respective years as required.

Several members attending the annual session offered suggestions for strengthening the Society. Most of them pointed out how the Society failed to curtail expenditures in various unproductive business activities. The report of the enquiry committee formed during the previous year was not published despite demands raised in that regard.
