20th NE Book Fair concludes

GUWAHATI, Nov 20 - Curtains came down today on the North East Book Fair, which recorded a footfall of around 3.5 lakh at the Assam Engineering Institute playground here during its 12-day schedule.

The All Assam Publishers and Booksellers Association, the organising body of the fair, informed that books worth around Rs 4.5 crore were sold this time.

Today, attending the valedictory session of the event, Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya said, �It is not possible for a government to solve all the problems of the society. Rather, we should all work hand in hand to solve some vital issues plaguing the State.�

Addressing the gathering, senior journalist Adip Phukan termed the 20th edition of the event as a book fair of the new generation, hailing their enthusiastic participation. �The large-scale flocking of youths to the book fair this time predicts a bright future of Assamese literature,� Phukan said.

According to various participating publishers, the new editions of various books written by Late Parag Kumar Das received an overwhelming response this time. Among other books which seemed to attract the readers were Hiren Gohain-Bastabata Aru Chetanar Swapna, Mandalaya by Mrinal Talukdar, Asomoloi Bideshi Prabajan-Nehrur Pora Modiloi by Jitendra Kumar Choudhury, Bhal Din Ahil Ne written by Kishore Kumar Kalita, etc.
