200 surrendered ultras apply for rehab

By Prabir sil

AGARTALA, Oct 3 - Aiming at lasting peace in Tripura, the Left Front Government in the State has initiated a process to address grievances of the surrendered insurgents.

Several surrendered insurgents have been left out of rehabilitation package on various grounds while quite a good number of returnees are still on the run to escape arrest warrant in connection with extremist-related cases.

In the past few months, some surrendered insurgents staged sit-in-demonstrations demanding immediate rehabilitation as promised at the time of surrender. To address the grievances of such surrendered insurgents, the Special Branch has given an opportunity to sort out their problem.

Under the opportunity, those surrendered insurgents who have not received rehabilitation package declared by the Central Government could apply before the Special Branch to consider their cases. Returnees could also approach the intelligence wing requesting it to withdraw all pending cases against them.

According to sources, around 200 surrendered insurgents have applied till September 30, the deadline for filing application.

As per the Central Government declared package, name of insurgent must figure in the outfits cadre list to get rehabilitation package. The insurgent must also deposit arms at the time of surrender to law enforcement agencies. However, there is a provision of getting rehabilitation package even if he or she could not deposit arms during the surrender. In such cases, IG, Intelligence, will take a final call.

Before availing the opportunity, the surrendered insurgents will have to face joint interrogation session, a mandatory guideline under the Central Governments rehabilitation package.
