SHILLONG, Feb 25 Armed miscreants today ransacked a village and set afire over 20 houses and shops this afternoon at Balian village in Byrnihat, Ri-Bhoi district. However, no one was injured in the incident.

The incident happened this afternoon when a group of armed miscreants descended into the village and started vandalism. The hapless villagers fled the scene and the miscreants set houses and shops in the vicinity on fire hurling petrol bombs, police sources said.

A few days ago, villagers from Rajabagan in the same area in Byrnihat attacked members of a social organisation Hynniewtrep National Youth Front. However, the police say that till a proper investigation is done the two incidents cannot be linked.

The situation might have flared up due to some misunderstanding between two individuals Moonlight Rabon and Marwell Areng who had a tussle sometimes back and todays incident might be a likely outcome of that misunderstanding. But, nothing can be said for certain now, a senior police official said over the phone from Byrnihat.
