GUWAHATI, May 28 - Poverty and various social evils disturb their daily life. But despite all challenges some youths from this section of people in various slum areas of the city, have penned success stories in various fields.
Two such examples are Hiramani Thakuria and Chandani Kumari of the Uzanbazar slum area, who shone in the Higher Secondary Final Examination conducted by the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC).
Both Hiramani and Chandani secured first division with 73.4 per cent and 66.2 per cent marks respectively in the examination, which is an example of talent winning the battle against poverty and social evils.
�I want to serve society through the teaching profession. I am happy with the result as it came despite my physical and financial challenges,� said Hiramani, a physically-challenged girl by birth, who appeared from Cotton University.
Daughter of a single mother, Hiramani gave the credit for her success to her teachers and family. �My mother works in a private hostel and she is the sole bread earner of the family. Acute financial problems have become a part of our life. But I will never quit my studies,� she asserted.
Hiramani wants to pursue her studies in either Cotton University or B Borooah College with economics as major.
�The academic environment at Cotton University is very friendly towards differently-abled students. This helped me in doing well in the examination. Moreover, I want to urge all differently-abled students of the State to continue with their studies braving all adversities,� she added.
Chandani, daughter of a city-based small fish seller, said, �I like the zoology subject and want to pursue a career in the field of medical science. So I will try for a seat in MBBS or B Pharma course.�
Chandani had appeared from Handique Girls� College in the Science stream. �The environment in our locality is not a healthy one. But despite all odds I tried to continue with my studies,� she added.
Mukul Bora, an official of World Vision India which provides assistance to slum children in continuing with their education, said, �Those two girls did very well in the examination and we hope in future they will shine in life. From our side we will provide all possible help to them.�
