2 PFI leaders arrested for inciting violence

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 18 - Assam Police today arrested State president of the Islamic organization Popular Front of India (PFI) Aminul Haque and its press secretary Md Muzammil Haq on charges of inciting violence.

Briefing journalists, Industry Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary said Rangiya police has registered a case against them (1237/19) under various sections of the IPC, including rioting, criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, provocation etc.

Police has evidence against them. They had been operating from an office located on Bhetapara Road in the city which was their permanent operation camp, Patowary said.

The number of arrests has shot up to 275, while nearly 3,047 persons have been taken into preventive custody following the violence that took place across the State since December 10 last.

The Minister also said the police was on the look-out for two Youth Congress leaders accused of inciting mobs in Guwahati.

Patowary said while there was peace in most areas of the State as of now, the government has inputs that fresh incidents might erupt in some pockets.

There are inputs that miscreants may indulge in more violence in some pockets. The government is monitoring the situation and reviewing it regularly, he said, when asked when the mobile internet services would be restored.

Maintaining that the government was sensitive to the emotions of the people and respects the nationalists organizations, including AASU, AJYCP and others, Patowary insisted that a third force was trying to destabilize the system for political benefits.

Similar forces were active during the Assam Agitation and we had discarded them then...The government cannot tolerate unlawful activities and the first responsibility of the government is to protect the life and property of the people, he said, adding that the government was trying to identify the unholy forces which were trying to destroy the peace and harmony in the State.

He alleged that misinformation on the Citizenship (Amendment) Act has triggered a panic in the State.

The Chief Minister himself had stated that the number of refugees who would be benefitted from the Act is negligible and it would not have any impact on the rights of the Assamese people nor pose a threat to the States culture, language and tradition. But rumours were being spread that crores of people from Bangladesh would enter Assam and get citizenship under the Act, which has created apprehensions among the people, he claimed.
