2 migrants killed, security beefed up in Manipur

IMPHAL, Sept 19 � Security has been beefed up in and around the State capital here following the killing of two non-local workers by unidentified gunmen in Manipur.

The two non-locals were killed in the last two days. Armed police personnel have been deployed at strategic locations in and around Imphal to prevent further escalation in violence.

On Saturday, around 5.30 pm, one mason Upendra Mukhia, 25, was killed when on way to his rented house after attending Vishwakarma Puja at Nagamapal Soram Leirak. Another worker Kamalesh Das, 23, was killed on Sunday around 8.30 am at Uripok Khoisnam Leikai, both under greater Imphal area.

The killed persons who hailed from Bihar,were staying in rented houses here, sources said. Police is yet to arrest any suspect. No armed group has so far claimed responsibility for the killings till filing of this report.

Following the development, the non-locals mostly workers residing in and around Lamphelpat, Singjamei, Kwakeithel, Mantri-pukhuri and Porompat areas under Imphal West and East districts have been provided shelter at Dharamsala and Kalimandir complex in the heart of Imphal since Sunday morning.

Altogether 118 non-local workers were staying at Dharmasala while another 36 others are sheltered at Kalimandir. Most of them are from Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa and Assam.

�The District administration has been providing food and shelter to them�, a police officer at Kalimandir complex said.
