2 Kuki militants killed in Manipur

IMPHAL, Jan 29 � Two suspected Kuki National Front (KNF) members were killed while three others sustained injuries in an alleged encounter at Kadangband area in Manipur�s Imphal West district last night.

The incident took place at Kadangband area under Lamshang police station when troops of Assam Rifles were on a foot patrol while the suspected ultras were moving in a car (Chevrolet WB-02S/6809) around 7.30 pm yeterday, sources said.

The two suspected KNF cadres who have been killed in the encounter have been identified as belonging to Senapati district.

However, family members told the media that one of the slain militant Khupneilal was an innocent civilian and secretary of Kangchup Chingkhong Village Authority and Vice President of Kuki Inpi Tuibul Lhang, Kangchup, the sources added. They claimed that Khupneilal�s car was hijacked by some suspected ultras.

A Joint Action Committee (JAC) against the killing has been reportedly formed. It has decided to take up a series of protests against the killing unless an inquiry is conducted, the sources said. Their bodies have been kept at the RIMS mortuary. Meanwhile, police claimed that two small arms, 10 detonators and one explosive cake were recovered from the possession of the deceased.

The injured persons, all from Senapati district, have been admitted to RIMS hospital for treatment, reports added.
