2 killed in Tuensang intra-tribe clash

DIMAPUR, Feb 7 � Two persons, including a minor, were killed in violent clashes between two tribes in Tuensang district yesterday.

Sources said a 15-year-old boy of a particular tribe was killed by the rival tribe in a village in Tuensang district on Friday morning. In a retaliatory attack, a mob reportedly belonging to the slain minor boy attacked a policeman of the rival tribe in the afternoon in Tuensang town. The injured policeman was rushed to the hospital but was dragged out and hacked to death.

A mother and a minor child who were taken hostage were later released at the intervention of an apex tribal body.

Two companies of armed police forces have been rushed to Tuensang while Central paramilitary forces were also asked to be on standby.

Chief Minister TR Zeliang held a high level security meeting in Kohima on Friday with senior civil and police officials to review the situation.

The State Government has also announced a slew of measures aimed at restoring normalcy in Tuensang district, according to a press release issued by Additional Chief Secretary and Home Commissioner.

The government has also announced ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh for the persons killed on February 6 and ordered the district administration to take action for deposit of all arms and ammunition in the affected area.

The district administration has also been asked to obtain bond/undertaking from the villages in the affected area for maintaining peace.

The release also informed that the DGP has been asked to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incidents that led to loss of life and property.
