2 killed in mishap

TEZPUR, May 12 � Two persons were killed when a heavy load-carrying Nagaon-bound ten-wheeler truck fell into the river Brahmaputra from the Kaliabhomora bridge after hitting the railings in the wee hours today.

It may be mentioned here that as it was not confirmed whether it was a passenger bus or a goods-carrying truck, no casualty has been reported initially. Soon after receiving the information, police and Army officials rushed to the spot and started rescue operation with the help of river police and local fishermen. However, they failed to ascertain the type of vehicle and the number of casualties till late afternoon.

After the rescue operation conducted by police and the Army almost failed, a team of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached the spot around 3.45 pm and intensified the rescue operation. The NDRF team after while could identify the ill-fated vehicle as a goods-carrying truck bearing registration No KA-17-C-0346.

When contacted, Sonitpur SP AP Tewary confirmed the death of truck driver Gopal and handyman Jitu in the incident, whose bodies have been recovered following a massive rescue operation. However, the truck is yet to be recovered.
